P B Chakrabarty Passes Away 15/11/2009
Mr P B Chakrabarty is as famous as TNA and any body who passed through TNA from
mid fifties to mid eighties of the 20th century will agree. All of us who were
in some way or the other touched by Chakrabarty Sir as he was fondly known
,will have some story to tell. I was first introduced to Sir when I was in class
III, he taught me Geography as I know now, then it was called General Science.
The story that I often tell about Sir is as follows. "One fine day sir stood me
up and asked me to name three Planets, well I wasnt a very bright chap and I
answered, Mercury, Venus, and then went blank. Sir was there prodding me to name the
third one , as all of us know ,when you know that a jolly good beating is on
its way, the mind goes to sleep. So did mine. Students of the present day might
find the next few lines of my story a little queer but in those days a few wacks
was supposed to do good and me and many of my friends still agree, so
there I was ,stood up on the bench and given a few wacks , anyway thats not the
best part of the story. The punch line as one would call it was that every time
a wack came Sir shouted 'Earth the planet you live in' Sir was more mad because I had
forgotten Earth, well as I say it ,since that fine morn I havent forgotten Earth
and PBC Sir"
An avid TREKKER, PBC Sir, had trekked all over Sikkim and he had many a tale to
tell us about his treks. Came as a very young man to sikkin in the mid fifties
and setteled in Sikkim he knew all the major languages of Sikkim. He had a few
songs he had written in the Lepcha language and would sing it to us in class
when he was in good humor. PBC Sir taught me again in class VII he taught us
General Knowledge, and if you ask me or my class mates ,class VII A 1979, to Name
the four Islands of Japan or the West Indies we will know the answer ,because PBC
Sir put it into our systems. I could go on and on. I request all readers of this
page to send us their stories so that we can add to this article. Please send to

Chakrabarty was perhaps one of the greatest teachers of TNA. It is a great
loss to TNA and all the tenacians. May his soul rest in peace and god give
strength to his entire family members to bear this great loss. With heartfelt
condolence..Jigmey Namgyal
Message from , Dr Pema Seden 1985, Mr PBChakraborty
or Chakray as he was popularly known was already a legend the first time he
entered our class(III or IV).We were suitably impressed by his whirlwind
entry, trademark chalk-dusted coat and his chalk-coated spectacles perched on his
impossibly hooked nose.As it was a proxy class,he announced that he would give a
demonstration on the various bird cries. So to the amazement of the class he took
us through a whole medley of bird cries from a cuckoo to a crow. The class was
having the time of their lives when a emboldened young friend asked Mr PBC to
mimic a peacock.Mr PBC went rigid on hearing this request,"A peacock",he
roared."Don't you know that the peacock has the ugliest voice among birds".Then
taking the duster he proceeded to give that unfortunate friend a thorough
(another trademarked) dusting! And yes,he DID the peacock cry. Years later when
I heard my first peacock, I remembered Sir Chakraborty. He was right,it was not
a pretty sound!
Every school has an icon and to many of us Sir Chakraborty was iconic. His
knowledge and grasp of Sikkimese culture, his various eccentricities, the legion
of Sikkimese who were his students all added to his stature.
WE WILL MISS YOU, SIR.
